Feature Article

We are all anxious and set to quiz Dee Dee about her past drug addiction and what the future holds for the ‘princess of R'n'B’. For the first time she is ready to set the record straight once and for all…

Dee Dee takes a deep breath and looks at the scene before she amazingly decides to crack a smile. As she becomes comfortable with the setting she greets everyone from the team cordially which is far from what you would expect from an upcoming music diva. Knowing that this is her first interview she said and I quote ‘I’m bloody petrified.’ Wearing a white long cardigan and black high heels, it seems she ready to for her close-up.

Music being her way of blocking out the negativity of the past couple of months it seems inevitable that she got the number 1 spot (2 days before her birthday.)
Stunning and talented are definitely just some of the words to describe Dee Dee as she sits down with our editor Stephanie Demarco to discuss her upcoming album and a rumour that she will be working on a duet with the one and only Alicia Keys!

S: Have you always been interested in music?
D: Yes I have been since I was a little girl it always been a hobby, but to be frank I never thought it would end up as my career!

S: You have recently just got the number 1 spot on the UK charts, how did you feel?
D: I was crying my eyes out, so embarrassing! I just couldn't help it after all the trauma I went through with the drugs. That was a huge achievement and a great feeling.

S: Speaking about your trauma with drugs, when did you begin this addiction?
D: I have never really called it an addiction because I always felt that I could stop anytime I wanted. It began when I was a teen as I was the rebel child of my family, didn’t go to school, and drank all hours of the morning. I was the brave one so I was introduced to some white stuff and without a hesitation I took it and never looked back.

S: When did you realise that enough was enough?
D: I had an overdose and just come out of the hospital but when I got home I just continued as usual. At this time I was feeling so low I had taken so much drugs that I collapsed and woke up in a hospital and I was just thinking I cant go through that s*** again.

S: Do you regret what happened in your life?
D: (Takes time to think) Yes and no. I feel like everything happens for a reason and I was just dumb enough to almost ruin my life and career. I sometimes think if I carried on I could have been in a grave. I’m so grateful that I got out in time.

S: I’ve recently heard that your going to be doing a duet with Miss Alicia Keys is that true?
D: (Smiling) I can now officially say that yes I am going to be working with Alicia Keys.

S: Is that all your going to say?
D: Yeah. No I’m only joking. (Laughs) We will be working together which I’m so excited about, it’s going to be a very soulful R’n’B Ballard which I know will be a huge success.

S: Now you’re a celebrity who’s constantly in the tabloids and the paparazzo is probably your best friends, how do you stay grounded?
D: Well its just how you handle it, I’m a very strong person but I do rely on support of my close friends and family as some of my supposed friends were trying to take me for a idiot and make money. I don’t really cast myself as a celebrity.

S: You’ve recently been nominated for a Brit award and the MTV Europe Music Award, how did that make you feel?
D: This has got to be my biggest achievement and I’m truly grateful that all my blood sweat and tears have paid off. (Laughs) Even being acknowledged gives me such a thrill. My mum still can’t believe it.

S: You have a lot of young fans who are obsessed with your music, how do you continue to stay a positive role model?
D: Honestly from this day I still don’t think of myself as a role model because of my past but if I am one than that is it great! My intentions are to make good music that my fans will love because when my fans are happy I’m happy.

S: You are now up to your third album and this album is due for success, I would say that this it is a lot darker and edgier than the other two?
D: You are absolutely correct. (Smiles) I wanted to make this album much more a soulful R’n’B album because I wanted to show my versatility. If you listen to the album it is kind of like my life story. I wanted my fans to connect.

S: The album is called ‘The Last Constituent’ what exactly does that mean?
D: Well I came up with the name after I finished writing the album. It means the last piece of the puzzle to my past. I felt that I’m now cleansed and ready to move on and I really liked the name.

S: You have been getting a lot of praise for yours songs and you also been rated to have one of the greatest bodies, how did you react to that?
D: (Laughs) I find it so funny because I’ve actually been put on this list. I do exercise but I just cannot eat healthy! Healthy food is tasteless and I get hungry 10minutes later.

S: Well I want to thank you for taking time to talk to me; it wasn’t that bad was it?
D: No it was great, I’m glad I got everything out in the open. Thank you
